Q:are you allowed to bring home food from the dining halls?
The dining halls have these lovely little “take-out” boxes that you can use.
Freshman are given one for free at the start of the year, and when you want to get take out, you just bring back the dirty one in exchange for a new one (I still suggest washing it yourself, though)
Dining staff is pretty strict in that if you get a take out box, you are JUST getting take out, and not eating and then taking food back as well.
But if you’re sneaky, theres ways to get around that.
For example, my roommate and I got some big tupperware containers, stuffed them in our backpacks, and got enough cereal from the dining hall to last us a week.
Also you’re allowed to take two pieces of fruit with you when you leave, or a cookie or something. Again, nothing that an empty backpack can’t help you to exceed.
Q:is it possible to change your meal plan? i already got one but now i'm not sure if i made the right choice. ps. the school is paying for my meals, so take this into consideration please
Yes, you can make one change free of charge or cancel your meal plan (and receive a refund for unused meals) until the end of the grace period (September 2, 2011) to your meal plan. Each additional change costs $50.00 to make and after the grace period so be sure when you change it that you’re changing it to what you want or will use. Cancelling after the grace period costs $250.00.
Meal plans are purchased via onecard.unc.edu. When you log in, your options on the blue menu bar include “change meal plan.” Follow the prompts from there.
The following link will take you to meal plan policies for 2011-2012.
Q:can you decode the meal plans/make a suggestion? do any of the plans include money that allows you to buy food from restaurants on franklin street, or is it limited to on campus (starbucks etc)? thanks!
Everything on Franklin Street is its own business; so no meal plans are able to be used there. The only money you can spend there is cash/debit/credit cards; etc., but no meal plan includes money for Franklin Street.
Meal plans are limited solely to the dining halls on campus, Top of Lenoir and Rams Head. You swipe in and it is in the style of “all you care to eat.”
Then, you have the option of buying “Dining Flex” to supplement the meal plan. Dining flex can be used at any of the Bottom of Lenoir locations (Chick-fil-A, Subway, Jamba Juice, Taste of the Hill, etc), the Subway in Rams Head Market, and the Starbucks inside of Rams Head. You can also use this money to order food online for delivery, which would be the only way to use dining money on Franklin Street restaurants. Note, however that this is ACTUAL money and not part of the meal plan.
Now that all of that is out of the way, there are several meal plan options. It was recommended to me last year that I consider how many meals I planned to eat in the dining hall and choose according to that.
The Block Plans can be used to swipe OTHERS into the dining hall, which is very helpful if you have a plethora of meals left at the end of the semester. You will lose the meals at the end of the semester if you don’t use them, so this will become important to get rid of the meals.
The Value and Unlimited Meals are limited to YOU only. Dining services will NOT allow you on an unlimited plan to swipe anyone in. The value plan gives you a piece of mine how many meals you have to eat in the dining hall per week so it gives you somewhat of a schedule of when you have to eat there.
I personally feel that if you’re living on south campus your dining option is better with Ram’s Head and you’ll probably want to eat there more often.
Overall, I recommend a block plan because you will be able to be a little more flexible in how often you eat there. If you’re not interested in being able to swipe others in at the end, go with a value plan but know you’ll lose the meals at the end of the week and not the end of the semester.
Q:Where exactly can you use the flex points? Like just in the cafeterias or where? The website wasn't very specific. Thanks!
Flex dollars can be used to buy food anywhere on campus
You can use them at the bottom or top of lenoir, rams head, rams head market, the pit stop, blue ram cafe and starbucks @ ramshead
Expense is similar to flex, but you have to have it to do laundry. It can also be used at any place that takes money on campus, including student stores and at the box office at memorial hall for tickets.
If you’re going to have flex dollars, I suggest just using expense. That way, your laundry money and everything is in the same place and you don’t have to worry about not having enough for laundry.
